Accounting is…
I’m currently immersed in Accounting Information for Executive Decision Making as part of Module 1 of my EMBA program. My BFA degree did not include any math classes (not that I’m complaining), so for me, learning accounting is just like learning a foreign language. While I love playing with the numbers and getting them to tell a story, it sounds as foreign to my ears as French.
I was in France this summer and I spent an entire evening surrounded by people who spoke hardly any English. We had a great time and I was quite impressed how well I communicated with my new French friends. I even thought my French was improving until one of my American friends translated some of my scintillating contributions to the evening’s conversations: I Susan. Cheese good. France like.
To my untrained ears, accounting sounds just like my broken French: Net sales like. Ratio good. Balance sheet, snapshot. But despite my rudimentary understanding of the terms and principles it’s starting to come together. And it just might be easier to learn than French.
